U8–U10 Mini’s Pathway

U8–U10 is an important stage in the long-term player pathway, where the priority is helping players build physical literacy, confidence with the ball, and a genuine love for the game.

Date & Location

September - March

Home & Away Games, 2300 Reeve St, Port Coquitlam

Program Overview

This phase focuses on building strong technical habits, game understanding, and physical literacy, while continuing to support confidence, independence, and a healthy relationship with sport.

Training sessions are fast, fun, and game-relevant, with lots of ball contact, small-sided games, and clear learning themes that encourage creativity, effort, and a love of the game.

Players are encouraged to be brave, take appropriate risks, and view mistakes as a natural part of learning and development.

PoCo FC is committed to a community-first environment where every player feels welcome, respected, and supported.

Finding the Right Level

PoCo FC offers both Community and Development team environments at U8–U10. Teams are formed with the goal of placing players in an environment that best supports their confidence, learning, and enjoyment of the game.

Community Teams

Community teams focus on participation, fun, and foundational skill development. Sessions are inclusive and supportive, with an emphasis on learning through play and building comfort on the field. No prior soccer experience is required.

Development Teams

Development teams provide additional challenge and consistency for players who are ready for a more demanding weekly environment, while still prioritizing enjoyment and age-appropriate learning. Training remains game-based and player-centred, with increased expectations around focus and engagement.

Placement into Community or Development environments is informed by year-long evaluations from the previous season and ongoing observation by the age-group Technical Lead and technical staff. There are no formal tryouts at this age.

Who It’s For

  • U8–U10 players (birth years based on the season’s age grid)

  • New and returning players are welcome

  • Players looking for a fun, supportive introduction to soccer or a slightly more challenging environment, depending on readiness.

PoCo FC is committed to inclusion and access. Families are encouraged to reach out if their child requires accommodations or additional support to participate. All conversations are handled respectfully and confidentially.

What Families Can Expect

  • A positive, player-first environment where children feel safe, welcome, and supported

  • Age-appropriate, development-focused training that remains fun and game-based

  • Coaches who encourage creativity, effort, and learning through play

  • Coaches who are screened, supported, and guided by PoCo FC’s Technical Plan and Playing Philosophy to ensure consistency across the club

  • A focus on confidence, enjoyment, and building a healthy relationship with sport

Player Development & Support

PoCo FC prioritizes long-term player development over short-term outcomes. At U8–U10, this includes:

  • Development and enjoyment as the primary focus

  • Equal and meaningful participation

  • Learning through play, exploration, and repetition

  • Ongoing observation to support appropriate placement as players grow

While games and competition are part of the experience, success is measured by confidence, effort, and development rather than results.

Parent & Guardian Role

  • Parents and guardians support from the sideline and remain nearby and accessible during sessions. Your role is to help your child feel safe, prepared, and confident by offering encouragement.

  • Coaches guide the learning and team environment. Parents are encouraged to cheer positively, keep feedback respectful, and allow players to learn through the game.
